The X360Key is a truly revolutionary Xbox 360 backup game loading device. The x-Key is a fully solderless plug and play DVD emulation solution that allows games to be loaded from an external USB hard drive or flash device. The USB hard drive or stick plugs in to the Xbox360Key external remote with OLED display which then plugs in to the x-Key USB dongle, which is inserted in to a USB port on the Xbox 360 console.
It supports games in ISO format including AP2.5 and full size XGD3 games. All that is required is to create a folder on a USB device titled 'games' and copy your backup game ISOs to this folder, this games are now ready to play on your console via the xKey.
Although we include the remote as part of our xK3y package, it can also be used without by a number of means, including ISOmenu and DVDmenu loading methods. These x360-Key backup loading methods allow you to load and change games without leaving the comfort of your armchair, using your Xbox 360 controller and an easily navigable menu which shows the names of the folders and ISOs on your hard drive. The DVDmenu method can be used to create a highly customisable loading menu with full game covers.
Important: There are reports of MS being able to detect the use of the ISOMenu and DVDmenu loading methods in a future update, we recommend disabling these in xkey.cfg and using only the external remote or WiFi adapter for choosing/loading games.
Lastly, the xK3y WiFi dongle can be used in conjunction with the xKey to load games from a stylish and highly customisable web menu or app on your iPhone or Android smartphone, see the x-K3y WiFi dongle page for more details.
The xKey 360 supports external USB hard drives and USB sticks up to a maximum size of 3TB! It also supports NTFS, FAT32 and Ext3/4 file system formats.
Xbox Live Safety
Questions regarding whether the xK3y is safe on Xbox Live are asked quite often. While Live safety cannot be guaranteed, as it cannot be guaranteed on custom drive firmware such as LT3, the below statement from the xK3y team provides a good overview of the current situation in regards to Live safety and the xK3y:
“Many people ask us if Xk3y is 'Live Safe'.
While we maintain that using Xbox Live is at your own risk, thousands of people use Xbox Live with Xk3y, and he have not had any reports of banning due to Xk3y.
A considerable effort went into profiling different drives to make sure Xk3y has accurate response times for all commands (unlike drives with hacked FW, which have considerably longer response times for many commands).”
In essence, providing you use either the included xkey remote or the WiFi dongle and do not use the ISOmenu or DVDmenu methods for choosing games along with following the usual precautions of checking games with ABGX and not playing games before release, you are as safe on Xbox Live as is possible while running backups.
The xK3y is now compatible with ALL Xbox 360 consoles currently released, both Fat and Slim.
For more details on how to use the x-Key 360 and how it is installed, please refer to the xKey User Manual and Installation Guide or Contact Us
All brands and models of DVD drive are now supported by the x-key 360 although some require RGH to be performed on the console for the drive key/drive data to be extracted, refer to the table below for more details.

X360Key Team Original Release Information (2011)
How it Works:
The X360Key runs a custom Linux operating system that emulates the Xbox 360 DVD drive, mimicking the original DVD drive of the console but allowing games to be loaded from a USB storage device rather than a DVD. What this means in practice is that the Xbox 360 sees the xKey and attached storage device as the DVD drive the console came with and is accustomed to loading from. The X-Key360 team has developed profiles for each of the availalble DVD drives to ensure that as far as the Xbox 360 console is concerned, the console sees the xkey and storage device with games on as the original DVD drive.
The X-Key360 main/motherboard is fitted between the DVD SATA port on Xbox 360 motherboard and the original Xbox 360 DVD drive in the console. The X360Key plugs in to the Xbox 360 DVD Drive itself and then the SATA cable from the Xbox 360 motherboard SATA port is plugged in to the xKey. The X360Key OLED display remote is then plugged in to the xk3y mainboard but is kept outside the console to allows USB storage drives to be connected to it. The remote allows the X-Key 360 to be controlled and games to be browsed on the USB drive and launched.
The X360Key functions in two modes:
- Emulation - The mode in which the Xbox 360 drive is emulated and allows games to be loaded from USB storage device.
- Pass through - The X-360Key is bypassed and the Xbox360 console and DVD drive function as normal as if the X360Key were not present.
Running a custom Linux system, x360-key is capable of immaculately emulating the optical disk drive in Xbox 360, allowing you to play all your Xbox 360 (and Xbox 1) games from any USB media. It is compatible with all Xbox 360 models, both Fat and Slim, and offers advanced features such as emulation of the AP25 protection.

How it works: The X36-0Key device consists of 2 parts, a motherboard and a remote.
The motherboard connects to the SATA port/bus inside the Xbox 360 console and then to the Xbox 360 DVD drive. The xKey is in essence a fully fledged computer running embedded Linux. The fact the X-360Key is a powerful Linux computer allows it much greater flexibility and the opportunity to implement features which are just not possible via the flashing of DVD drive firmware due to the DVD drive chip's limited capacity and speed.
X-360Key is able to:
- Emulate (mimic with accuracy) the Xbox 360 DVD drive
- Read USB hard drives and other USB storage media devices with various file systems
- Update itself and other hardware from attached USB storage media
- Communicate with the xK3y remote and other external USB devices
- A lot more in the future! (embedded Web server and Wifi connectivity for example)
The X-360Key remote is a simple, stylish device that features an OLED display and 3 buttons. It is used outside the Xbox 360 console and connects to the X360-Key main/motherboard inside the console via a high speed USB 2 connection. The remote also has a USB port that is used to connect USB hard drives and other storage devices to load games from. The OLED display and buttons are used to control various aspects of the xKey and for browsing the attached USB storage media devices and launching games.
